Rouhani told visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu that now that the region is in a critical condition, cooperation and consultation by Tehran and Ankara in resolving issues can make a difference. If major regional powers stand together, problems in Iraq and Syria will be resolved without the need for foreign powers, Rouhani said. Foreign Minister Cavusoglu said preserving the territorial integrity and national unity of Iraq and Syria is in the interest of Iran and Turkey as well as that of regional peace and stability. He also highlighted the importance of expanding relations between Iran and Turkey.

In another development, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday had another telephone conversation on Syria. In the previous talks on Friday, the leaders discussed bilateral relationships and solutions to the Syrian crisis, especially cooperation to fight terrorism.
