Iraqi government forces capture Kirkuk

(VOVWORLD) - Iraqi forces took full control of Kirkuk city on Monday, following a 4-hour clash with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered that the national flag be hoisted over Kirkuk and other disputed areas. He called on the Peshmerga forces to serve under the federal authority as part of the Iraqi armed forces.

Turkey voiced its support for Iraq’s campaign in Kirkuk while a senior advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the Peshmerga forces' withdrawal from Kirkuk has put an end to a dangerous plot hatched against regional security. US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that Washington supports the Iraqi government and has maintained fine relations with the Kurds, adding that the US will not take sides in their dispute.
