Iraqi PM declares victory over Islamic State

(VOVWORLD) - Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the Islamic State in Mosul on Monday, marking the biggest defeat of the terrorist state since its establishment three years ago. 

Abadi arrived in Mosul on Sunday to congratulate the military commanders who have waged a nearly nine-month battle to recapture the city.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry telephoned his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim El-Gaafari Monday to offer his congratulations on Iraq's victory against the IS in Mosul, highlighting Egypt’s commitment to standing by Iraq in its fight against terrorism.

China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday congratulated Iraq on the liberation of Mosul, calling it a significant victory in war against terrorism. New Zealand also joined the global chorus in congratulating Iraq on the liberation of Mosul. New Zealand's Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee announced a further one million USD contribution to the UN Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization, which has played a key role in restoring stability in Iraq.
