The statement came after the sixth meeting of Foreign Ministers of Central Asian countries and Japan in Turkmenistan’s capital of Ashgabat. The ministers considered North Korea’s nuclear ambition a serious threat against international peace and security. They urged Pyongyang to follow the resolutions of the UN Security Council, which prohibit North Korea from conducting nuclear tests or using ballistic missile technology. The joint statement also stressed the need to resolve the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea a few decades ago.

The same day, US President Donald Trump said he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un under the right circumstances. In an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg News, Trump said if it would be appropriate for him to meet the North Korean leader, he would be honored to do it.
