The two-day meeting was held amidst differences regarding territorial disputes, the deployment of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system in South Korea, and North Korea’s nuclear program. This has been the first meeting among the three countries’ foreign ministers since March 2015, and the eighth meeting since the trilateral mechanism was created. This meeting has been the first held in Tokyo in five years.

It will lay the groundwork for a trilateral summit, which is planned to take place on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in China next month.
