Japan detects Chinese patrol ships near Sensaku/Diao Yu

(VOVWORLD) - The Japanese Coast Guard (JCG) reported on Monday that 4 Chinese patrol ships had entered waters near the Senkaku islands in Japan, known as Diaoyu in China. The ships left the area after just under 2 hours, the JCG said.

The Senkaku/Diao Yu islands are currently under Japan’s control. China also claims sovereignty over the islands and regularly sends patrol ships and aircraft to the area. Japan and China’s relationship has been strained over the islands dispute in the East China Sea, particularly after Japan nationalized 3 of the 5 islands in the disputed Senkaku chain in 2012.
