Japan pushes for CPTPP's enforcement despite US possible return

(VOVWORLD) - Japanese Economic Revitalization Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Friday that the possibility of the US returning to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal will not change Tokyo’s roadmap to promote the signing of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Mr. Motegi who is in charge of Japan’s TPP negotiations made the statement after US President Donald Trump suggested the US may return to the TPP negotiating table. Trump told CNBC in Switzerland on Thursday that he will consider a return if better terms are made.

Addressing a press conference, Motegi said clauses of the TPP-11 have been decided and the current priority is to bring the deal into force. He added that he welcomed Trump’s acknowledgement of the importance of the TPP and said Tokyo is ready to assist the US on the TPP-11 if asked.
