Live TV program “Hanoi-Tuyen Quang” to mark the 1st general election

(VOVworld) – The Vietnam National Television, VTV, will organize a live TV program in Hanoi and Tuyen Quang entitled “The representatives” to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1st general election in 1946. Historians and National Assembly deputies will attend the program to talk about its significance.

On August 16, 1945, representatives from localities nationwide attended a congress in Tan Trao commune, Tuyen Quang province to prepare for a national election. The congress was considered the precursor of the Vietnam National Assembly. The congress introduced 10 guiding principles on universal suffrage, democratic and civil rights.
Nguyen Sy Dung, Deputy Head of the National Assembly Office, said they were the foundation of a new regime of the people, by the people, and for the people as well as Vietnam’s 1st general election on January 6, 1946: “The people’s congress in Tan Trao created a legal foundation for an interim government before an official election to confirm its formal authority. The interim government wanted to affirm its power to administrate the government through a general election where all people cast the votes to express their will.”
