Ly Son Island commemorates sailors of Hoang Sa flotilla

(VOVWORLD) - A feast and commemoration ceremony for Hoang Sa’s soldiers was held on Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai province, on Tuesday, to honor their achievements in mapping Vietnam’s islands and defending Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos.

The annual ritual has been observed for centuries by families on Ly Son Island. It is followed by a traditional boat race.

Nguyen Thanh Phuong, a resident in An Vinh village, said: “The ceremony is held every year on the 16th day of the third lunar month to commemorate those who has sacrificed their lives to protect the archipelago. The event also serves to remind younger generations of their predecessors who came to Hoang Sa 400 years ago to essert national sovereignty over Vietnam’s seas and islands.”
