Myanmar’s speaker and opposition party leader agree on national reconciliation

(VOVworld) – Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy and Thura U Shwe Mann, Myanmar’s parliament speaker have agreed to promote national reconciliation and national solidarity in forming the incoming parliament.

In a joint statement following a closed-door meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday, both sides agreed to work together to complete the duties of the remaining parliamentary sessions, set a positive post-election tone based on mutual respect, and negotiate and coordinate in the next parliament in accordance with the law.  

The dialogue, the first between Madam Suu Kyi and Mr. U Shwe Mann, was made at the request of Suu Kyi after the NLD party won the November 8 election.

In the statement, the two sides pledged to continue working for Myanmar and to ensure a peaceful transition honoring the results of the election.
