NA Chairwoman calls for strengthened cooperation with Australia

(VOVWORLD) -National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has suggested that Vietnam and Australia increase cooperation and mutual support in global and regional issues of mutual concerns, including consolidating regional structures and boosting free trade and economic connectivity.

During a meeting in Canberra on Thursday with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, deputy head of the ruling Liberal Party of Australia, Ms. Ngan said that Vietnam will work closely with Australia to hold activities to mark the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties in 2018.

Ms. Bishop said she hopes that both nations can lift bilateral ties to a strategic partnership level in March next year. She shared Vietnam’s view of basing world order on interactional law and applauded Vietnam for raising the East Sea issue in regional forums. The Minister said that Australia backs the settlement of disputes by peaceful means on the basis of dialogue and respect for international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On the same day, the Assembly Chairwoman met Governor-General of Australia Peter Cosgrove. Ms. Ngan said her visit shows the Vietnamese National Assembly’s resolve to deepen the Expanded Comprehensive Partnership with Australia. She expected the Governor-General and the Australian government to continue encouraging businesses to invest in Vietnam.
