NA leader receives delegation of EP’s Committee on Fisheries
(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam considers the European Commission’s “yellow card” warning to Vietnamese seafood an opportunity to boost the fishery sector’s sustainable and responsible development, said Vice Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Phung Quoc Hien, in regards to the illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from the European Parliament (EP)’s Committee on Fisheries led by MEP and Committee Spokesman Gabriel Mato. Mr. Hien added that Hanoi is implementing many concurrent measures to have the warning lifted.
He asked Mato, together with other MEPs, to prompt the EC to consider Vietnam’s efforts for the early removal of the “yellow card” warning for Vietnamese seafood exports to the EU.
He spoke highly of the EC’s move to submit the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to the European Council for its approval, stressing that the EP plays an important role in the EU’s decision-making process. The vice chairman expressed his hope that the EP would back the official signing and ratification of the agreement as soon as possible.
