National Assembly to pass coast guard law at year-end session

(VOVWORLD) - National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has underlined the special position played by the sea and islands in national construction and defense, saying that Vietnam is moving towards the goal of being a strong maritime country.

Ms. Ngan attended a ceremony marking 20 years of the Vietnam Coast Guard’s traditional day. She described the Vietnam Coast Guard as the core force in protecting national security, and maritime order and safety. 

“Challenges including disputes on the East Sea and possible instability in our other key waters, are posing great challenges for our efforts to safeguard independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security. The National Assembly is expected to approve the Law on Vietnam Coast Guard in its next session, to create a complete legal basis for the coast guard force,” Madam Ngan said.

At the ceremony, Chairwoman Ngan presented a third-class Military Order to the Vietnam Coast Guard. The Vietnam Coast Guard has set up bilateral and multilateral ties, and hotlines with law enforcement forces of 20 countries.
