Nearly 170 casualties as violence rocks chaotic Afghan elections

(VOVWORLD) - Nearly 170 Afghans were killed or wounded in poll-related violence on Saturday, officials said, as the legislative election turned chaotic with many polling centres opening hours late - or not at all - due to technical glitches and lack of staff.

Most of the explosions took place in the capital city of Kabul, in which at least 4 were killed and 78 wounded. The attacks have rocked the election despite tight security set up by 54,000 Afghan soldiers and police. Taliban rebels have called on Afghans to boycott the election.

On Saturday, millions of Afghan voters turned up at polling centers for the long-delayed Parliamentary election. Afghanistan's electoral commission said it was extending voting to Sunday after several polling stations failed to open.
