The North Korean website Uriminzokkiri said US-South Korea joint exercises, which have been postponed during the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in the South, "should be ended forever”. In an editorial published on the 76th anniversary of former leader Kim Jong Il's birth, it said military tensions should be reduced as a matter of first priority to mend inter-Korean relations and to make a breakthrough toward reunification.

Meanwhile, Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party said that Pyongyang has become a nuclear power thanks to the earnest efforts by Kim Jong Il.
