At the 33rd General Debate of the UN Human Rights Council, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Nguyen Trung Thanh said a key to the success of the Universal Periodic Review was it being a mechanism where each country was objectively reviewed.
The Universal Periodic Review had to continue to be conducted in a non-selective and non-confrontational manner. National mechanisms were best placed to translate recommendations into action for citizens.
He reaffirmed ASEAN’s belief on and commitment to the Universal Periodic Review in line with the UN resolutions. ASEAN countries believe that UPR should enhance dialogue to share experience on human right protection.
