Abbas said the Palestinians were looking forward to a peace process that would lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Abbas stressed the need for all sides to fulfill their obligations to resume serious negotiations that would lead to an end to occupation and bring peace and stability to the region.

Herzog said he is certain that a peace agreement can be reached if both sides have enough goodwill to resume talks, including serious negotiation between the leaders of Israel and Palestine. He called for resumed peace talks amid escalating tension in the West Bank after Jewish extremists burnt Palestinian houses on July 31, killing two people and wounding two others. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said there had been attacks targeting their troops in the West Bank.
