Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet on Monday in Helsinki, their first stand-alone meeting since Trump took office in 2017. The two leaders will hold a joint press conference on Monday afternoon. Yuri Ushakov, Mr Putin’s foreign policy adviser, said the two leaders have no time limit for the closed summit, and they will decide whether to release a joint statement after the talks.

Walid Phares, President Trump’s former adviser on the Middle East, said Trump and Putin are likely to agree on general principles concerning Syria’s civil war. According to Phares, the general principles could include a real ceasefire across Syria, an end to ISIS, and a pull out of foreign forces from Syria. He said he hopes the US and Russia will discuss the presence of Iranian troops in Syria and agree to withdraw their own troops from Syria as part of a wider security plan. Phares said that once Syria is stabilized, solutions can be found for the Israel-Palestine conflict, creating a large security mechanism for the Middle East.
