More than 3,400 civilians were also wounded during the period. According to a report by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), improvised explosive devices caused nearly half of all civilian casualties. Ground engagements were the second leading cause, followed by targeted and deliberate killings, aerial operations, and explosive war remnants.
