Peskov said it is important that both sides recognize the absence of a peace treaty as a big problem, adding that Prime Minister Abe and President Putin have affirmed their intention to work towards a peace treaty to formally end World War II.

Putin told Abe at the Eastern Economic Forum in Russia last month that the 2 nations should pen this year the peace deal, which relates to a dispute over a chain of Pacific islands since the time of World War II.
