Russia: No alternative to current deal on Iran’s nuclear program

(VOVWORLD) - Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that there is no alternative to the current Iran nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron called for a new deal with Iran.

Peskov said Russia is in favor of preserving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program, since it would be difficult to repeat the meticulous work done to complete it.

French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters at a joint news conference with US President Donald Trump that Paris is ready to work with Washington on a new agreement. According to Macron, it is necessary to tackle four issues: to block the nuclear program until 2025, to provide a long-term solution, to halt Iran’s ballistic missile program, and to promote stability in the region.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani questioned the legitimacy of the proposal. He said the US and France have no right and no reason to change the agreement between Iran and six international mediators (Russia, the UK, China, the US, France, and Germany).

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said that the current Iran nuclear deal is working and needs to be preserved.
