(VOVworld) - Russia denounced as "falsifications and fabrications" media reports that it was changing its stance on the war in Syria or on the future of President Bashar al-Assad, said the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday. The ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement that Russia consistently and determinedly supports the strict implementation of the Geneva communiqué on Syria adopted on June 30, 2012, adhering to the norms and principles of the international law and respecting the sovereignty of other states. She added that Russia does not practice social engineering, does not appoint or dismiss foreign presidents, by its own will or in agreement with somebody else. She stressed it concerns Syria and other states in the region, which are able to decide their future by themselves.

In a related development, the United States on Monday asked Greece to deny Russia the use of its airspace for supply flights to Syria. In a phone conversation on Saturday, US State Secretary John Kerry told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that if information about Russia increasing its provision of military aids to Syria was true, it would escalate the civil war and complicate US-led airstrikes against IS in Syria.
