Russia made the decision after French police arrested Russian fans, who were heading from Marseille to Lille, and accused France of discrimination against Russian citizens. The Russian Foreign Ministry said French authorities failed to inform the Russian embassy about the detention for hours, adding that the anti-Russian measures could damage relations between France and Russia. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the detention "absolutely unacceptable".

Last week, English and Russian football fans clashed at the opening B match in the city of Marseille. French police then stopped a bus carrying Russian fans and arrested them.
