Authorities temporarily halted search and rescue efforts on Sunday and placed 3,000 people under evacuation orders amid fears that another dam nearby was about to rupture. The orders were lifted after authorities determined that the dam was no longer at risk of bursting. The search has resumed, by air and on foot with dogs. Dozens of helicopters will be deployed because thick mud is proving too treacherous for ground rescuers.

The disaster has renewed scrutiny of Brazilian mining giant Vale, a company linked to another deadly dam collapse in Minas Gerais less than four years ago.
