At a ceremony in Hanoi on Thursday, Nguyen Tam Chien, Vice Chairman of VUFO and President of the Vietnam-US Society, said the activists devoted their youth to protesting the war in Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s. They participated in and mobilized many others to join demonstrations and activities to show solidarity with Vietnam and demand the withdrawal of US troops. When the war ended, they continued to work for bilateral friendship and cooperation.

Chien said Vietnamese people will always remember with gratitude the US friends who stood side by side with Vietnam to end the war and restore peace to Vietnam.

The awardees are Frank Joyce and his wife Mary Anne Barnet of Detroit, Michigan; Judy Gumbo Albert of Berkeley, California; Alex Hing of New York; Karin Aguilar-San Juan, a teacher at Macalester College, Minnesota; and Douglas Hostetter of Virginia.
