South Korea: North Korea fires new-type short-range ballistic missiles

(VOVWORLD) - The South Korean government on Friday said the two projectiles fired by North Korea  the same day were new-type short-range ballistic missiles. According to  South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), both projectiles flew around 220 km at an altitude of about 25 km.

The projectiles were fired at 2:59 a.m. and 3:23 a.m. from Yonghung, in South Hamgyong province. The information was released at an emergency meeting of senior security officials at the Presidential Palace in Seoul.

The meeting was chaired by Chung Eui-yong, Director of the National Security Office, with the involvement of Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo and Suh Hoon, head of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Ko Min-jung, presidential spokesperson at the Blue House, said the US and  South Korean governments believe that the projectiles are substantially similar to the ones Pyongyang released at the end of last month that North Korea described as newly developed intercontinental ballistic rockets. Ko Min-jung added that Seoul and Washington will continue to work closely to uncover further details.
