Spanish PM: Referendum on Catalonian independence illegal

(VOVWORLD) -Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said in a TV address on Sunday that Catalans were cheated and there was no independence referendum in Catalonia.

According to Rajoy, most Catalans didn’t want to go to the poll. He said Catalonia’s leaders knew the referendum was illegal but carried it out anyway.

Spain’s constitutional court and central administration have consistently maintained that the referendum in Catalonia was illegal and contrary to EU’s targets and ideals.
