Suspect killer of Russian pilot tried in Turkey

(VOVworld) – On Sunday, the court in Izmir city, Turkey tried Alparslan Celik who is accused of killing Oleg Peshkov, a Russian pilot after his plane was shot down by a Turkish jet near Syrian-Turkish border last November.

He and 14 others were arrested on March 30 and were charged with possessing and using illegal weapons. Celik and the detainees were said to have returned from Syria after fighting for opposition forces there.

A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet shot down the Russian Sukhoi Su-24M bomber aircraft near the Syria–Turkey border on 24 November 2015. The incident increased tensions between Russia and Turkey.
