Thailand drafts new constitution

(VOVworld) – Thailand has drafted a new constitution. This, the country’s 20th constitution, replaces a provisional constitution which was adopted after a coup in May.

Bowonsak Uwanno, President of the Constitution Drafting Committee, said the committee’s members were not under pressures from any party and the constitution is expected to be completed and submitted to the interim parliament for approval next August. He added that the new constitution should not be based on Thailand’s two most recent constitutions adopted in 2007 and 1997 and that the Prime Minister and Cabinet should not be directly elected.

Under on the provisional constitution which is in effect, the Constitution Drafting Committee will gather opinions from the government, regional representatives, and 7,000 others.
