Three more countries sign nuclear ban treaty

(VOVWORLD) - Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Namibia formally signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in a ceremony at the UN in New York on Friday.

The signing reflects the commitment of countries to a world without a threat of nuclear weapons and ensures its supporters to use the nuclear power only for peaceful purposes. These countries will implement legal procedures to prepare for the treaty ratification.

56 countries have signed the Treaty, three among those have ratified it. The Treaty will enter into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 countries. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament. It was officially adopted by the UN on July 7 at a UN meeting attended by 124 countries.
