Speaking over the phone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned against any intervention by Syrian pro-government forces alongside Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, saying that pro-government forces were expected in Afrin to counter the Turkish offensive against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

Turkey last month launched Operation Olive Branch to remove YPG/PKK-Daesh terrorists from Afrin, northwestern Syria, along Turkey's border.

According to the Turkish General Staff, the operation aims to establish security and stability along Turkey’s borders and the region as well as protect Syrians from oppression and cruelty of YPG/PKK-Daesh terrorists.
