About 60 people joined the vigil in the small square in the village, where some of the remains and personal belongings of passengers on the Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur fell to the ground in 2014.

Small pieces of wreckage that have not yet been handed over to Dutch investigators were stacked outside the office of the village council head Natalia Voloshina to mark the anniversary.

On Sunday, the Malaysian government reiterated its commitment to seek the truth two years after the tragedy. Prime Minister Najib Razak said the downing of flight MH17 "was a criminal act that outraged the world". He said the Malaysian government continues to seek a full and satisfactory explanation of the events that led to this tragedy.
