Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom, whose country holds the presidency of the Security Council for July, said she hopes the lifting of sanctions will "happen shortly."

Dutch ambassador to the United Nations Karel van Oosterom confirmed on Tuesday that there might be discussions at the Security Council on the lifting sanctions. The Security Council imposed sanctions on Eritrea in 2009, including an arms embargo, for its destabilizing role in the region. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Monday requested the lifting of sanctions, which he said naturally become obsolete if the reasons that led to them no longer exist.
