US trade ambassador Dennis Shea drew fire from Chinese envoy Zhang Xiangchen, who said the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum products are protectionism under the dubious guise of national security concerns. The statements were exchanged at the start of a meeting at the WTO to review US trade policies.

Mr. Shea said the US is committed to competitive markets and free, fair and reciprocal trade, while Mr. Zhang called on the US to help make the WTO fairer.
