US House approves tighter North Korea sanctions

(VOVWORLD) - The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill on Thursday to tighten sanctions on North Korea by targeting its shipping industry and companies that do business with it.

The legislation was intended to send a strong message to North Korea, amid international concern over the escalation of its nuclear program.

The bill, which is aimed at foreign trade, shipping, and labor, authorizes the US Department of Homeland Security to inspect cargo being shipped to North Korea. Ships from North Korea will not be able to enter US seaports.

The bill must also be approved by the Senate before it can be signed into law.
