(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese airlines might operate direct flights to the United State as the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to soon give Vietnam a Category 1 rating, according to the Strait Times.
The status upgrade for Vietnam is not yet official, but according to anonymous US officials the announcement could be made within the next few weeks. The new rating would permit new routes between the two countries and codeshare opportunities with US-based carriers.
The FAA ratings evaluate a country’s adherence to international aviation safety regulations and ICAO standards. Category 1, the top rating, would open up new business opportunities for Vietnam’s airlines.
Travelers currently must connect through other Asian hubs like Hong Kong, Seoul, or Tokyo.
