US wants EU to end WTO steel spat

(VOVWORLD) - The US has urged EU governments to reflect on whether it is really in their interest to go ahead with a trade dispute over US metal tariffs and said it is hopeful of settling the issue with Mexico and Canada.

US Ambassador Dennis Shea told the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday that Washington is deeply disappointed with the EU’s stance. He encouraged European countries to consider carefully their broader economic, political, and security interests.

China, Norway, Russia, and Turkey asked the WTO to judge the legality of the US tariffs despite Washington’s assertion that the tariffs are a matter of national security and therefore outside WTO jurisdiction.
