The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday that the US decision was unilateral, which violates international law. Venezuela asked US President Barack Obama to respect the UN Charter and not sign the bill extending the sanctions. The statement criticized the White House for inciting forces to undermine democracy and unleash chaos, which could lead to political instability and social disorder in Venezuela. The statement insisted that nothing can stop the advance of the Bolivar revolution.

The bill extends sanctions against 7 Venezuelan politicians who the US considers threats to its national security to 2019. Their bank accounts in the US will be frozen and they will not be permitted to enter the US.
