Vietnam attends first meeting of Eurasian parliament speakers

(VOVworld) - The first consultative meeting of Eurasian parliament speakers took place in Moscow on Tuesday to boost parliamentary cooperation between Asian and European countries.

The event drew speakers from 19 countries, including members of ASEAN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Sergey Naryshkin, Chairman of the State Duma, underlined the theme of the meeting, which aims to create a multilateral international cooperation system. Participants discussed the development of inter-parliamentary dialogue in Eurasia to expand cooperation in politics, economics, legal and humanitarian issues, environmental protection, and efforts to promote peace and discourage extremism. In his address, Vietnamese National Assembly Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu said the meeting promotes parliamentary diplomacy in international politics. He called for an exchange of ideas for promoting Eurasian connectivity and creating an equal and thriving society while sharing values and opportunities and ensuring legitimate rights and freedom. He said: “Vietnam is committed to Eurasian connectivity and is ready to cooperate with other regional countries in overcoming challenges and making the most of Eurasian cooperation in the next decade.”

Delegates approved a 17-point joint statement with specific recommendations to boost parliamentary cooperation. A number of bilateral meetings were held on the sidelines of the meeting on Wednesday.
