Vietnam attends unofficial ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

(VOVWORLD) - Ministers of Foreign Affairs of ASEAN countries Friday convened an unofficial meeting on the sideline of the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York.

Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN, Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Dinh Quy told the meeting that unity and consensus within ASEAN are the key factors to maintaining regional peace and stability.

Mr. Quy, who is also Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN, affirmed ASEAN’s view on the East Sea issues and asked relevant parties to comply with the Declaration on the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), heading toward the ratification of the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.

Also on Friday, the ASEAN-United Nations Ministerial Meeting was held at the UN Headquarters in New York. Thw two sides reaffirmed the importance of further strengthening their Comprehensive Partnership toward the fulfillment of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy supported ASEAN and the UN to strengthen cooperation in peace-keeping mission, preventive diplomacy, and law enforcement capacity in the region. He expected the UN to help build an ASEAN Community and obtain Sustainable Development Goals. He said Vietnam will work with the UN and ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation to organize an ASEAN-UN regional dialogue later this year.
