Vietnam calls for more international support in war consequence settlement

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam wants the international community to join efforts to deal with war consequences, and help Vietnam develop sustainably and participate more in UN peacekeeping operations.

In his remarks at an international workshop in New York on Monday, Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh thanked international friends, especially the UNDP, for helping Vietnam overcome war consequences over the years. Mr Vinh highlighted Vietnam’s efforts to move on from war into a new development period and its desire to promote international cooperation. He said the Vietnamese Government endeavours to make Vietnam thought of as a country of peace and safety.

Asako Okai, Assistant Secretary General of the UN, UNDP Deputy Director General and Director of the UNDP Crisis Bureau, acknowledged the challenges facing Vietnam in settling war consequences and maintaining sustainable development.
