At talks held after the welcoming ceremony on Thursday, the two leaders highlighted the importance of stability and development in each country and the development of their special relationship. They reached agreement on major directions for bilateral cooperation in the near future agreeing to strengthen political cooperation, maintain delegation exchanges, share their experience in Party building, and increase coordination in organizing major events between the two countries.

They agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in defense, security, economics, education, training, and human resource development as well as at regional and global forums including the UN and ASEAN, Greater Mekong Sub-region cooperation mechanisms. The two leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, and safety in the East Sea and strengthening ASEAN consensus in the East Sea issue, and promote peaceful solutions to disputes on the basis of international law. At the talks, Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong said Vietnam would build the Parliament House at That Luong Square in Vientiane as a gift to Lao. Party leader Trong presented to Borikhamxay province the gift of a school whose construction would be funded by the Vietnamese government.
