Vietnam prioritizes cooperation with UN

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam always views the United Nations as one of the priorities of its foreign policy and a leading partner, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said while receiving Under-Secretary-General of the UN Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, who is also Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

At the meeting in Ha Nam province on Sunday on the sidelines of the UN Day of Vesak 2019 celebration, Prime Minister Phuc said Vietnam recognizes the UN’s central role in building an international legal system, maintaining peace, preventing conflicts, and responding to global challenges. He called for greater cooperation, asking UNESCAP to continue advising Vietnam on its socio-economic development policies, and helping Vietnam build capacity, develop human resources, realize its Sustainable Development Goals, and cope with climate change.

The UN Under-Secretary-General said she wants better relations with Vietnam and expressed her hope that Vietnam will use its role as ASEAN Chair in 2020 to foster ASEAN-UNESCAP relations.
