Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang on Wednesday responded to reporters question about Vietnam’s reaction to the USS McCampbell destroyer’s passing Vietnam’s Paracel archipelago. She went on to say that as a member state to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and a East Sea coastal country, Vietnam always respects the freedom of navigation and aviation safety in the East Sea in line with international law, specifically the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Demands and related activities by coastal countries should comply with international law as reflected in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Vietnam asks countries to continue with active and practical contribution to maintaining peace and stability, while respecting and delivering related international legal obligations as well as the rule of law in waters and oceans.
