The 12-day session, which began in New York on Monday, is being attended by more than 100 ministers, vice presidents, deputy prime ministers, and representatives from NGOs and UN offices.

This year's session focuses on social protection for women and girls, giving women and girls access to high-quality and affordable services and infrastructure, and empowerment of women and girls.

Minister Dung said that, following this year’s theme “Safe year for women and girls”, Vietnam will implement comprehensively solutions for women, focusing on sustainable development goals, poverty reduction, and special conditions for ethnic women. More attention will be given to developing a welfare system to ensure that all women benefit from social protection policies, make women self-empowering, and improving the legal system to harshly punish trafficking and violence against women.

Mr. Dung said Vietnam has been commended for remarkable progress in gender equality toward joint action and coordination plans to realize the  UN Millennium Development Goals.
