Addressing a workshop on COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday,  Acting Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said the vaccine is currently tested on mice. “We have instructed relating agencies to complete vaccine research, trial and usage regulations for COVID-19 vaccine in Vietnam. We will speed up the assessment process to ensure the vaccine availability as soon as possible while maintaining safety and efficiency for users,” he added.

The four Vietnamese vaccine developers are Vaccine and Biological Production No. 1 (VABIOTECH), the Center for Research and Production of Vaccines and Biologicals (POLYVAC), the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC), and Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.

Vietnam has joined the Covax Facility, a global initiative of 92 participating countries to supply 2 billion vaccine doses by the end of 2021. This will enable Vietnam’s early access to the vaccine.

According to the World Health Organization, as of September 24, there are 187 COVID-19 vaccines under study, of which 38 are in clinical trials.
