Liem drew the last and seventh match against Adani Pouya of Iran in the men’s individual standard category to take the title. Liem, No 26 in the world, finished with 5.5 points from four wins and three draws.

Liem said: “In the final match, I played against Iran’s number 2 player. I knew that to win the gold medal I had to defeat or at least tie him. I played carefully and gained a small advantage in the middle of the match but could not win it. I think I had a good performance here and am satisfied with the result.”

With eight golds, the Vietnamese contigent surpassed their target of 7.
