At a ceremony in Hanoi on Friday, Mr. Vuong said that 40 years ago following the urgent call for help from the Cambodian United Front for National Salvation, the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers together with the Cambodian nation overthrew the Khmer Rouge regime and save Cambodians from genocide. This closed a dark page of history of the Cambodian nation and opened a new era of revival and comprehensive development. From 1979 to 1989, the Vietnamese Party and State sent nearly 350,000 cadres to Cambodia to help in national salvation. After returning home, the former experts have made contributions to Vietnam’s construction and defense. Mr. Vuong said: “The great contributions by Vietnamese cadres, volunteer soldiers, and experts will be remembered forever, written down in the history of Vietnam and Cambodia, and acknowledged by progressive humankind. Nothing can distort this historical truth. Reality proves that on November 16, 2018, after many trials, the special court of Cambodia under the auspices of the UN, ruled life sentences for top leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime for their crimes against humanity.”

Politburo member Vuong expressed his hope that the former experts will contribute more to friendship and solidarity between the two peoples and to the development of the two nations.
