Participants discussed investment cooperation and shared orientations in potential and advantages for agricultural development of each country.

Also high on the agenda were the transfer and application of advanced technology in agriculture and production of qualified farm produce for exports to Japan as well as supply of Japan’s products to Vietnam.

Nguyen Van Tan, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Seaproduct Corporation, said Japan is a very demanding market compared to others in terms of product quality. Imports to this market must satisfy requirements as to origin, breeding hygiene, and processing technology.

Tan noted that with the state’s support Vietnamese exporters will be capable of penetrating Japan, which will be a key future market for Vietnamese seafood.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh said the involvement of private firms in investing directly or forming linkages with Japanese businesses will play a major role.

Mr. Doanh noted that the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is devising a policy to encourage investment in agriculture and rural areas. This will lay a foundation for both sides to strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit and develop Vietnam’s farming sector.

Two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Japan rose five fold over the past decade, from 5 billion USD in 2002 to 25 billion in 2012. Last year, Japanese agriculture companies invested 230 million USD in 34 agricultural projects in Vietnam.
