Vietnamese pursue records at international competitions
(VOVworld) - The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism organized a meeting in Hanoi on Tuesday to honor coaches and athletes for their performance at the 28th SEA Games which took place from June 5-16 in Singapore. The Vietnamese delegation of 400 athletes won 186 medals including 73 gold, to finish third in the overall standings. Vietnamese athletes set 13 Sea Games records, some in Olympic events like athletics and swimming. Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh spoke at Tuesday’s meeting:
"Although we achieved significant results at the recent Sea Games, it’s important for us to acknowledge the fact that our achievements are far behind those of Asia and the rest of the world. I call for greater effort by coaches and athletes to improve their training and compete fairly to achieve better results at the upcoming Sea Games, ASIAD, and Olympic events."

Swimmer Anh Vien, who took home eight individual gold medals and eight new SEA Games records, and gymnast Phan Thi Ha Thanh who won three gold medals, were awarded the Order of Labour, second class. The Order of Labour, third class, went to 25 other athletes. Certificates of merit were presented to numerous individuals and collectives for their contribution to Vietnam’s sports sector.
